Surgical Retina Procedures
When medicines and office procedures cannot restore vision, minimally invasive surgery can repair the delicate retinal tissue.
This microsurgical procedure removes the vitreous gel to repair macular holes, clear hemorrhage, or reattach the retina. Small instruments and fluid exchange help speed healing.
Vitrectomy removes cloudy vitreous and traction membranes to treat hemorrhage and epiretinal scars. It can be combined with gas or oil to support the retina during recovery.
Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Injections
Anti-VEGF medicine is the current standard for many blood-vessel problems inside the eye.
These medicines block vascular endothelial growth factor, a signal that causes abnormal vessels to leak or grow. By shutting down this signal, swelling is reduced and vision can stabilize or improve.
Anti-VEGF injections are used for wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion.
The medicine is placed into the eye during a quick office visit. Injections are often given monthly at first, then spaced out as the retina remains dry.
Minimally Invasive Retinal Therapies
Some retinal problems can be treated in the office with laser, freezing, or lifestyle guidance instead of surgery.
Focal, grid, or micropulse laser seals leaking blood vessels, shrinks swollen retina, and repairs small tears with pinpoint energy.
This scatter laser treats proliferative diabetic retinopathy by removing oxygen-starved tissue in the retinal periphery. The therapy lowers VEGF levels and reduces the risk of bleeding and glaucoma.
A freezing probe applies controlled cold to the eye wall. The ice creates a firm scar that closes retinal tears, treats certain tumors, and supports surgical repairs.
Nutritional supplements, balanced diet, and avoiding smoking can slow the early stages of macular degeneration and support long-term retinal health.
